There is a lot to consider when buying a diamond and the type of diamond is the most important element.
INTRODUCTION TO THE 4CS
When purchasing diamond jewellery, you will probably hear mention of the 4Cs. This refers to the Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat weight of the diamond. Here’s an illustrated look at what each of those C’s mean courtesy of the team at Hearts on Fire.
Of all of the 4Cs, cut has the greatest effect on a diamond’s beauty, and can affect the value of a diamond by as much as 50%. We often think of a diamond’s cut as a shape, but the cut grade is really based on how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. In determining the quality of the cut, the diamond grader evaluates the cutter’s skill in the fashioning of the diamond. The more precise the cut, the more captivating the diamond is to the eye.
Colour gem-quality diamonds occur in many hues, ranging from colourless to light yellow or light brown. Colourless diamonds are the rarest. Other natural colours – for example blue, red, and pink – are known as ‘fancy,’ and their colour grading is different compared to white colourless diamonds. Many of these colour distinctions are so subtle that they are invisible to the eye; however, these distinctions make a very big difference in a diamond’s quality and price.
Diamonds can have internal characteristics known as inclusions, or external characteristics known as blemishes. Evaluating diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, nature and position of these characteristics, as well as how these affect the appearance of the stone. While diamonds without inclusions or blemishes are rare, the closer it comes to being pure, the higher its value. Most characteristics can only be seen with magnification, so it is extremely important to have an expert assess a diamond’s clarity.
The carat is the diamond’s physical weight measured in metric carats. One carat equals 1/5 gram and is subdivided into 100 points. Diamond price increases with carat weight, because larger diamonds are rarer and more desirable. But two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values, depending on the three other factors of the 4Cs. It is important to remember that a diamond’s value is determined using all of the 4Cs, not just carat weight.
