Five choices, one ring
Choosing an engagement ring comes down to five things: the shape of the diamond, the setting that holds it, the diamond itself, the metal and the size. Here's what each one means and how to decide.
You don't need to have it all worked out before you visit. Our consultants will walk you through the process from start to finish, with no obligation and no rush.
Choose a diamond shape
Shape sets the whole character of the ring, so it's the best place to start.
Round brilliant is the classic, cut for maximum sparkle. Oval is one of our most popular, elongating the finger and looking larger for its carat weight. Pear, marquise and radiant bring a little more personality, while emerald and old mine cuts have a softer, vintage glow.
The easiest way to decide is to try a few on. Most people are surprised by which one they love.
Choose a setting style
The setting is how the diamond is held, and it changes the whole look of the ring.
Solitaire: a single diamond that lets the stone speak for itself.
Hidden halo: a fine row of diamonds under the centre stone, seen from the side.
Halo: a ring of diamonds around the centre stone for extra presence.
Bezel: a smooth band of metal around the stone. Modern, protective and great for active hands.
Three stone: a centre diamond with a stone on each side.
Toi et moi: two stones side by side, often in different shapes.
Choose your diamond
First, decide between a natural or lab grown diamond. Both are real diamonds: chemically, physically and optically the same. The difference is origin and price. Lab grown lets you choose a larger, higher-quality stone for your budget; natural offers the rarity of a stone formed deep in the earth. We offer both and are happy to show them side by side.
Then look at the 4 Cs: cut (how well it sparkles), colour, clarity and carat weight. Every diamond in our engagement ring collection is independently certified by the IGI, GIA or HRD, so you know exactly what you're buying.
Choose your metal
We make engagement rings in 18ct yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum.
18ct gold balances rich colour with durability. White gold is rhodium plated for a bright white finish; the plating needs renewing every 18–24 months, which is complimentary under our Lifetime Care Commitment. Platinum is naturally white and doesn't need re-plating.
If you already know the wedding band you'd like, choose a metal that will sit well alongside it. We can design the two together.
Get the size and timing right
Ring size: if it's a surprise, borrow a ring they already wear on that finger, or use our ring sizing guide. Rings from our Available Now collection include a complimentary resize.
Timing: rings from our Available Now collection can be with you quickly, with same day shipping available. Custom rings are usually completed within 6–8 weeks of design approval, and priority service is available if you have a date in mind.
Engagement ring questions
How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
There's no set rule. The right budget is whatever you're comfortable with, and we'll help you create something beautiful at any price point.
What's the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds?
Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds: chemically, physically and optically the same as natural diamonds, but grown in a controlled environment rather than formed in the earth. The main differences are origin and price. We offer both and are happy to show you them side by side.
How long does a custom engagement ring take?
Most custom engagement rings are completed within 6–8 weeks of design approval. Priority service is available if you have a date in mind, so let us know when you book.
Can I use my own diamond or gemstone?
Yes. We're happy to work with a family stone or a diamond you already have, provided it's suitable for your chosen design. Our jewellers will check it before we begin.
Can I see the design before it's made?
Absolutely. You'll see hand sketches and a 3D CAD render of your ring from every angle, and nothing is made until you approve it.
Will my engagement ring and wedding band sit together?
We can design your engagement ring with a wedding band in mind. If you already have a band style you love, we'll design the two together in CAD so they sit beautifully side by side.
Can I choose my ring without visiting a store?
Yes. Virtual appointments work just like visiting us: we share designs, diamonds and CAD renders on screen, and deliver your finished ring insured anywhere in Australia.
What does Lifetime Care include?
Complimentary cleaning and six-monthly inspections, rhodium plating for white gold, and resizing within standard limits, for eligible pieces of $1,999 or more. See our Lifetime Guarantee for full details.
