Chris and Shirley Piggott Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary

Chris and Shirley Piggott Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary

Chris and Shirley Piggott met at Sydney University where they were studying Pharmacy. They married and moved to Newcastle where they bought their first pharmacy in Blackbutt in 1970. They have four children and nine beautiful grandchildren. Three of their children have followed in their footsteps as Pharmacists and we are sure many of you are familiar with one of the Piggott’s Pharmacies today! We sat down with Chris to chat to him about a little surprise he planned for Shirley for their 50th wedding anniversary.

What brought you into Matthews Jewellers last year, Chris?

Chris: Our 50th anniversary was approaching and I wanted to do something memorable for Shirley. Despite my very deep love for her, it was not usual for husbands to have a wedding ring when we married 50 years ago. I decided it was time for me to get down on one knee and present her with another ring – but this time it was mine! I chose an 18 karat yellow gold band from the Matthews range.

How did you celebrate your anniversary?

Chris: We planned an overseas trip including a visit to our 1978 Rotary exchange student, Susannah, in Denmark. Our family have remained close with Susannah and her family. On the big day I got down on one knee and offered Shirley a small parcel beautifully wrapped by Matthews Jewellers. Shirley seemed bemused and when she opened the gift she remarked that the ring seemed too big for her finger. Yes, I announced that the ring was, in fact, for myself! We all chuckled and celebrated with a fine Aussie wine.

Why did you choose Matthews Jewellers?

We would always choose a small family company with professional excellence whenever possible, especially with something as important as a lifelong token of fidelity. Matthews lived up to their reputation!

So, here's to Shirley and Chris! Thanks for letting us help you finally get a wedding ring!
