Gold purity is measured in carats, indicating how much pure gold is present in the alloy:

• 9ct gold contains 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% alloy metals
  
• 14ct gold contains 58.5% pure gold and 41.5% alloy metals
  
• 18ct gold contains 75% pure gold and 25% alloy metals
  

The higher the gold content, the richer the colour and the better it will wear over time. Higher gold content also allows the metal to bend rather than crack under pressure, which is particularly important for delicate features such as claws.

For this reason, we recommend 18ct gold or platinum for pieces intended for everyday wear.
